All That Glitters by Ava Cherry (2022). Hardcover edition. Memoir by Ava Cherry, musical collaborator, lover and muse to David Bowie during the 1970s. Cherry credits Stevie Wonder for persuading her to work with Bowie. Cherry and Bowie embarked on a multi-year affair during which time her soul music influence and connections fostered Bowie’s award-winning Young Americans project. Cherry would later enjoy a multi-year career with Luther Vandross.
Throughout the memoir, Cherry recounts memorable times spent in the orbit of a multitude of other artists including Chaka Khan, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Bob Marley, among many others. She also had a heartwarming moment with Frank Sinatra and a humorous encounter in England with the Queen Mother. She also recounts mentoring a young Whitney Houston.
Cherry released solo albums produced by Curtis Mayfield (Super Fly) and Bob Esty (Bette Midler, The Pointer Sisters, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer). In recent years, the resilient Cherry has successfully worked on rap and contemporary dance music and collaborated with Chicago “House” icon Frankie Knuckles. She continues to appear at Bowie fests and museum exhibits around the world.
